How-to

Connect to your server

Use the browser terminal or SSH from your computer, and get back in if you lose access.

There are two ways in: the terminal in your browser, or SSH from your own computer.

From the browser

  1. Open VPS, then View on the server.
  2. Open the Terminal tab and choose Connect.
  3. Use Fullscreen for a larger window you can move and resize. Choose Disconnect when you're done.

The terminal needs the Can manage permission on the server. If your account uses two-factor authentication, complete it first.

From your computer with SSH

You need the server's public IP, shown on the server page (click it to copy), and a key you added when you created the server.

ssh root@203.0.113.10

Replace the address with your server's IP. If your key isn't the default one, point to it with -i ~/.ssh/your_key.

First connection

SSH asks you to confirm the server's fingerprint the first time. Type yes.

Lost access?

  • Reset the root password: on the server page, open Settings → Reset root password. The new password is emailed to you within a few minutes. Check your spam folder.
  • Use the browser terminal, which doesn't need your SSH key.

Secure your server

After you first sign in:

  • Install updates (apt update && apt upgrade on Ubuntu and Debian).
  • Create a regular user for daily work.
  • Turn on a firewall that allows only the ports you need.
